Paul Garner’s ‘Aktion Kat!’ named among Memphis Flyer’s Playlist of Antifascist Tunes

On  Jul. 2, 2025, The Memphis Flyer posted, “ Positively ‘UnAmerikan: A dozen songs of resistance by the city’s most antifascist bands,” where author, Alex Greene curates a rad playlist of tunes by Memphis bands with a staunchly Antifascist edge.

“Aktion Kat! Prophesying the Barbenheimer phenomenon with their 2021 release, Soft Power.

Among the mix that includes Pachuco-billy blues rockers, Los Psychosis, and the more polished, Red Squad, we find our favorite Antifascist furry felines, Aktion’s Kat!, with their track, Ferguson to Palestine. Written over a decade ago, released on their 2023 album, Transgress!, and sadly still just as poignant today.

Greene writes, “…Aktion Kat is ready and willing to embrace a more international perspective, especially on the hard-hitting, yet surprisingly folksy, “Ferguson to Palestine,” where he sings: “Riot police and flash grenades/Tear gas canisters Amerikkkan made/All funded by the taxes we pay/Occupation is a crime/Ferguson to Palestine. It’s about class, it’s about race/It’s about fuckin’ time that we smash the state and we all participate/Revolution in our time. Ferguson to Palestine/We oughta know, we all should know, this is for real/It’s not a show. There’s blood in the streets wherever you go/Hands up, don’t shoot. I’m young and Black/I wanna live and not get shot in the back.”

AK has always been about as politically subtle as a Molotov cocktail to the windshield of a cop car. Greene continues;

“It’s an unflinching embrace of radical chic, and if some feel it’s merely a fashion statement, note that Aktion Kat has played a supportive role in nuts-and-bolts politics, as with last December’s Community Distro event that passed out harm-reduction gear and collected contributions for a food pantry. Also note that the group’s allies are legion, and, as they write, “Their myriad komrades are molotov kocktail-slinging kittens from the 9th dimension.” Moreover, they’re armed with a comic strip and action figures. Who said smashing the state couldn’t be fun?”

Paul Garner’s “Soft Power” Music Video for Aktion Kat! Takes Center Stage at Indie Memphis Film Fest

Aktion Kat!’s “Soft Power” Music Video Takes Center Stage at Indie Memphis Film Fest

In a notable celebration of creative expression, Aktion Kat!’s music video, “Soft Power,” emerged as a highlight at the recent Indie Memphis Film Festival. The lead single from their fourth album, the video was a collaborative effort led by the versatile artist Paul Garner, who took on roles ranging from writer and director to costume designer and prop constructor.

“Soft Power” explores the enduring struggle against societal oppression, cleverly embodied by the P.I.G. The video serves as a visual commentary on the subtle influence of power, reflecting on its manipulation of desires and our passive submission to cultural and state dominance.

Selected as a finalist in the Hometowner Music Videos category, the screening took place on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at Memphis’s historic Hattiloo Theatre. While the video didn’t clinch the top spot, a panel discussion featuring Aktion Kat! in full character added an unexpected touch, showcasing the band’s playful spirit.

“Soft Power” not only stands as a testament to Aktion Kat!’s musical and visual artistry but also highlights Paul Garner’s versatile talents. As the echoes of “Soft Power” linger, audiences can look forward to more from Aktion Kat! and the ongoing evolution of Paul Garner’s artistic journey.
